where hospitality people meet

I'm currently about to commence my hospitality and tourism management masters dissertation (at Oxford Brookes), and would very much like some thoughts from those already in the industry on what they believe to be the most useful and current topics that need further research behind them.

My inital thoughts have fallen into the area of technology and looking into how it can optimise or possibly save hotels/restaurants/other hospitality businesses money.

Any further ideas would be very much appreciated.

I will have to complete some primary research, so if any specific businesses or companies have something particular they would like researched or to discuss any other possibilities please feel free to email me directly on dk.perry@hotmail.com
Thank you!

Hello Danielle

Thanks for your question! The hospitality and tourism industries are so broad and there are so many issues within, you could write about almost anything! Having completed a dissertation myself, I would advise you to select something in which you have a genuine interest or passion. A dissertation is a huge piece of work and therefore it should be around a topic you can get excited about and really want to research. Technology is certainly an interesting topic, particularly the issues surrounding the conflict between saving money through technology and losing customer service values through losing the human factor?

I know sector is so broad, which is why i'm getting a little overwhelmed by the amount of possible topics that I could take on as a challenge. I also would like one that is going to be quite good into leading to possible career ideas or options, and so therefore has to be quite industry specific and hopefully one that could possibly aid the hospitality sector in some small way?

Hi Danielle,

If you are interested in technology and the areas surrounding it, Bacchus is hosting an external speaker who will be giving a lecture entitled: The effects of Web 2.0 on the hospitality and tourism industry at the end of Feb. You are able to sign up outside the coursework drop off boxes in Fuller. He might be able to give you a few ideas.

Regards,
Tom

Hi Danielle, a fab topic to pick and obviously a huge one! As a trainer I would say something that always interests me is the technology that the 'generation Y' students are used to as learning tools compared to the potentially outdated training methods that are currently used in the industry - there's a massive divide between what today's graduates and school leavers are used to and what employers are providing and it would make for a very interesting research topic... Good luck!!
