hotcatUK

where hospitality people meet

Many people may not realise it but they are apart of a phenomenon that has taken off in recent years...social networking has become a part of everyday life with all walks of people engaging sometime on an hourly basis! Men, women and children of all ages from the very young to the elderly cant get enough!

The chances are that you can’t name many people who don’t have Facebook with it being the most trafficked website in the UK with over 200 million users encompassing 18% of the UK population (just over 11 million) and growing daily!

Social networking has however now begun to enter the world of work with many businesses choosing the online system to communicate. With the focus to build online communities of people who share similar interests will this really work in today’s competitive business arena?! Well...yes! According to online jobsite highscores 63% of 419 managers approve of using social networking sites to recruit employees, 13% however are against such methods.**

The benefits of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and hotcatUK are clearly seen to be beneficial. You only had to be at last week’s hotcatUK ‘Live’ event to see them. Social networking might not be for everyone but its clearly having an impact on the world of business.

The question is are you going to be apart of it!?!

Hi Marcus,

I still stand by what is said in the article and I think that the facts surrounding social networking speak for themselves, it is something that is still continually growing! More and more people are starting to use social networking not only for business reasons but also personal.

For me as a student I have found the 'Live' events to be a tremendous way of meeting professionals from industry as well as increasing my confidence when meeting people for the first time. Number have clearly been increase on the site and it is nice to meet new people at every event. After all if it was the same people each time it might get a bit monotonous!

The benefit of these events as well is that it is not limited to certain people, it is open to everyone and this is a feature that I feel will allow hotcatUK to continue in growth and development. For industry professionals to be able to mix with all sectors, students and academic staff alike the industry is allowed to develop further and strengthen that triangular diagram of student, educational institute and indsutry sectors.

As far as Im concerned this site is a fantastic tool in the ever growing social networking development and long may it continue!

Thanks for your words of encouragement Tom. I have, on many an occasion used you as an example of a student who is making a name for himself through the use of hotcatUK and hotcatUK Live. Hope you don't mind.

Almost 3 years on and I still cannot figure out why more students, like yourself, don't use the opportunity served to them on a silver platter.

Totally agree with you Jose, i think it is very noticable from the event held at Oxford Brookes what students are able to get out of events that are staged by Hotcat and Tom is a great example to all students and shows benefits of what can be acheived though attending networking events, you just never know who you will be metting and what paths this could take you along......

It is extremely interesting to read about social networking and the view of others. Currently, I am a student at Oxford Brookes and have attended three of the Hotcat Live events. During the past year at University it has also becoming an increasingly hot topic for 'graduates to be'. From personal experience students need understand to understand the importance of networking.

I agree with you Marcus, you never know who you will meet. I have met many interesting people that I hope to continue to stay in contact with. I look forward to attending more Hotcat Live events where I hope to meet many more people.

The pit falls of presenting yourself in social networks are often discussed and maybe young people aren't yet aware of the consequences for their future and working life. I agree that nowadays you can learn a lot about people who are very present on the web and in social networks but they also have the possibility to influence the picture people get of them, online reputation will become always more important.

I have found via this site and others that it is easy to think that you are the only person having these things happen to you, reading the stories written and with such humour only re instates the fact that the rest of us working in hospitality have the same issues and the same sort of day's most of the time.

I have also noted that it is true that the youngest of us are using the sites more than us older ones as we still rely on the old network of knowing so many in the job, and experience counts.
I am now learning all about Facebook , but because of my age I am more aware of the pit falls of people surfing the net and discovering more about you ( especially if you are attending interviews ) they learn more about you in the short time of visiting your profile and discussions that at any other time !!!!

It is a fantastic way of meeting people from your walk of life and, different ones, but not without it's pitfalls.

Hi Claudia

I think through the events so far such as Hotcat, we are constantly meeting young people and they are very keen to pick our brains; to help them decide what to do in the future. I always feel that the majority of people that are in range of 18/23 have been very aware of what they are able to gain out of such events and like anyone else they see events as opportunites to meet people that will be able to help them now or in the future.

Im not sure if you have such events in Germany but through various conversations that i have had with Uni's and college's networking is one of the key areas that students will look to in terms of their future and career possibilities.

The more they attend events they will have more on line presence, and i will use Tom Shorney as an example as Jose has done in the past, i would hazard a guess that a large majority of people on hotcatuk will know who Tom is as he attends events, he participates and writes discussions.

Social and website networking is increasingly getting more popular and I guess it will continue to grow and become even more important to any industry proffesional such as our selves
