Have you ever found yourself walking around and unable to find a place to eat because you did not book in advance?
Well, that was me and a couple of friends on Saturday night. We set out to try our chances in a small Swiss restaurant near Soho but did not get passed the door before we were told that they were full for the whole evening. Disappointed we left in search of an alternative and totally committed to try an independent restaurant instead of a branded one part of a chain. We tried a couple others in the vicinity without much success and finally ended at the Regent St end of Brewer St.
And there it was, our newly found gem: The va bene ristorante, an understated independent italian restaurant where bookings were not required.
Located on Brewer Street, Piccadilly, The VaBene strives for elegance and style - reads their website - not only in the décor of the ristorante and aperitivo but also in their food. The VaBene offers an array of traditional authentic dishes from Ravioli di Aragost Con Caviale Avruga (Home made Lobster Ravioli with Avruga caviar) to the Old Italian favourite, Spaghetti Bolognese. The talent of these chefs has made The VaBene a favourite with starts from around the globe, making it their hide out when visiting London.
From the moment we opened the door and were greeted by a very friendly italian waiter, we knew we were onto something good.
We were offered a selection of pre-dinner "rustic" canapes the moment we sat down, which were the perfect amuse bouche while we browsed their extensive menu of italian classics and home made pastas.
Va Bene is not a pizza restaurant and none is to be found in the menu. However, a great selection of pastas, rissottos, meat and fish dishes and much more, guarantees that there is something there for every one.
I had a minestrone soup followed by their home made lasagna and a selection of italian cheeses for dessert, which I shared with my fellow diners, who opted for Rissotto (one garlic and one seafood) and a delicious Tiramisu in a biscuit basket.
The food was delicious and the service very friendly and relaxed. Just what we needed!
I am always on the look out for independent restaurants and Va Bene really exceeded our expectations. The bill came to £120 and we have 3 courses, followed by an after dinner coffee and liquor and a bottle of wine. Service was also included. We thought that it was reasonably priced and left very happy at having found it.
So, if you are in the West End, The Va Bene is definitely an independent restaurant worth visiting.
